He was married to Deborah from 1964-1966 but Susan Mott has been his partner since 1969. He has 1 child by his wife and 3 step children. Being born to European Jewish parents he was very aware of the holocaust and politicized at an early age.

As an Independent candidate he became mayor of Burlington, Vermont. Then after serving 16 years as a congressman he was elected to the Senate in 2006. Sanders gained public recognition after he filibustered the Bush tax cuts. He was outspoken against the Iraq war and championed many good causes i.e. income inequality, universal health care, civil and privacy rights, etc. To him the community provided his most significant learning. As an independent he is free to vote as he pleases but has almost always voted with the Democrats. After online petitions Sanders was urged to stand for the presidential election in 2012 and is now currently running for the Democratic presidential candidate against Hilary Clinton. He calls himself a social democrat and stands up for the working people in the USA against multi nationals who pay poverty wages abroad.
